Re-post of the album "The Asia" (Asia) (Original Post: June 6, 2007).
Re-post of Asia's "Asia I" (originally posted on June 6th, 2007).
The debut album of the supergroup Asia (John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes) of the same name of the band, and is considered by many (including the me) their best work. In 1981, John Wetton, Steve Howe (recovering from the recent departure from Yes) began working on the project "Asia." They joined Soon Carl Palmer (of the EL & P) and Geoff Downes (Buggles and former member of the same Yes it belonged to Steve Howe).
The self-titled debut (which place today) was released in 1982 and, in the wake of the 45 blockbusters "Heat of the moment" and "Only time will tell", was a huge commercial success, reaching top positions in charts of many countries (U.S. included). The songs on this album show their freshness at a distance of 25 years, and are being offered by many stations that broadcast rock music. However, critics and many fans of progressive rock were disappointed by this album, whose music resembled too, apparently, to pop commercial.
Whether this is true or not, "Asia" is still to be heard, and many of his songs (eg "Only time will tell", "Sole Survivor", "Cutting it fine", "Without You") are examples of good rock.

personal mark ( poor / fair / good / separate / very good / excellent ): Distinguished .
The first album released by progressive rock group Asia arena (John Wetton, Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, Geoff Downes) bears the band name and examination is to be Considered Their best one. Founding members John Wetton and Steve Howe (having come out of the break-up of Yes in early 1981) started working and writing in 1981 and were subsequently joined by Carl Palmer (from E. L. & P.) and Geoff Downes (who had previously worked with Buggles and Yes themselves.
Asia’s eponymous album (which I’m posting today) was released in 1982 and, boosted by famous singles “Heat of the moment” and “Only time will tell”, enjoyed massive commercial success, becoming a Number 1 hit in many countries (including the U.S.A.). The tracks from the Asia debut have stood the test of time and are played on classic rock stations throughout the world today. Yet, Asia’s first album was considered disappointing by music critics and many fans of traditional progressive rock, who found the music closer to radio-friendly pop.
In any case, “Asia” is worth a listen, as many of its tracks (e.g. “Only time will tell”, “Sole survivor”, “Cutting it fine”, “Without you”) are no doubt very good examples of rock music.
